You can’t really say you’ve visited a US State, unless you hop out of the car and do something in that State, right? Our brief pass through the top left hand corner of Nebraska was no exception. But where to stop?
How about an exact replica of the famous English archaeological site – Stonehenge, made out of cars? Say what? Allow me to explain….
That’s right, in a field, on the side of the road in his hometown of Alliance, Nebraska, Jim Reinder thought he’d create his own Stonehenge. With no slabs of rock at his disposal, he decided to create his ‘Henge out of 50s and 60s car carcasses.
And it looks nothing like the mass freeway pile up you’d expect! Planted boot (trunk) down, all 38 of the major slabs of Stonehenge are cleverly replicated and dubbed Carhenge.
Summer of 1987 Summer Solstice Art? Questionable car lovers passion gone too far? Who knows! But, you know how I’m a sucker for outdoor art and sculptures. It was definitely a fun and quirky stop on the Jandals and Jet Planes 2018 Summer Road Trip.
The attraction is free, and besides wandering the Carhenge circle, there are a few other fun car art works to explore.
The colourful cars perched precariously around the main Carhenge were a fun balancing act, along with the trout and dinosaur sculptures made from car parts.
Mad? Slightly! But also pretty impressive.
A perfect spot for stretching our legs, running around, and capturing a few interesting photos before the rain came down.
What interesting outdoor art have you seen lately?
